Assalamualaikum, and a very good morning/evening to Mr. Amirul from class ELC 105. First and foremost, language is a social phenomenon. Language is used to communicate with people to understand one’s purpose and message. Language in new media, however, has evolved over the years thanks to the Internet. The role of a language is important in media as it serves the purpose of spreading messages. More people worldwide is starting to gain access to the Internet, means there is no targeted audience from a specific background. According to Henriette Arndt (2017), with media language, it is easier to get their point across to numerous platforms to anyone in the world.
Which leads us to another point; I personally think messages conveyed are easily interpreted with the new media. News outlets, blogs and advertisements rely on the importance of language so they can reach out to the target audience and hopefully, expand in the respective fields. This means, the role of language here can act as a marketing strategy for business using online-based platforms.
Moving on, with new media language, jobs are done faster and easier. We now have more opportunities to engage with someone in a myriad of ways. Which brings us to the next point: short-forms and abbreviations. Common terms used in this situation for example are ‘ASAP’ (as soon as possible), ‘FWD’ (forward) and ‘FYA’ (for your action) are used in emails in a formal way. When referring to the informal way, we think of ‘emojis’ or symbols. ‘Slangs’ are commonly used informally as well.
(EMOJIS)
In a nutshell, it is readily agreed that the language acts as different roles and serves different purposes for the greater benefit of mankind. From reaching out to people worldwide and getting jobs done, the roles of languages is superbly beneficial and not to mention very helpful in the 21st century.
